From Cricket Dreams to Web3: Vinay’s Journey to Community Leadership

25 Sep 2024

Meet Vinay, Somnia’s Community Lead. Vinay enjoys cricket, movies and taking long drives to relax his mind. He’s also built some deep connections with communities across Web3 during his many years in the industry. In this interview he shares some details about his background with the community, and talks a bit about how things work behind the scenes, and what he does in his free time.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.

A: I always had the desire to pursue a career in a unique field, rather than following the traditional paths of becoming a doctor or engineer. Initially, I put my heart into becoming a professional cricketer, but financial constraints prevented me from affording proper coaching. As a result, I completed my degree in engineering. However, my passion for pursuing a different career path ultimately led me to the world of communities and Web3.

With a background in engineering, I’ve always had a passion for tech, though coding was never my strong suit. My love for technology led me to explore the Web3 space, where I first got involved with communities in 2018. I began by working alongside influencers on community-building efforts and even launched a few small businesses. However, I always felt the urge to go beyond generic community work. This drove me to join a project as a community consultant, where I spent a year before transitioning to DeFi with Vega Protocol, focusing on community and marketing for over 2.5 years. Communities and tech continue to excite me, and I remain deeply invested in them, constantly seeking that next level of fulfillment.

What got you interested in blockchain technology?
A: I’m deeply excited by the decentralisation, transparency, and rapid evolution of blockchain technology.

What are your favorite things about the crypto space?

A: The culture of a community-first approach, networking at Web3 events, and observing the unique marketing approaches employed by Web3 projects are among my favorite aspects of the industry.

What are some of your least favorite things about the space?

A: My least favorite aspects of the space are the scams and those who claim that this industry is just a passing trend.

Do you have a favorite video game? If not, music or movies will work.

A: My love for cricket was so strong that I enjoyed playing cricket games in my childhood. But, now I prefer watching cricket and movies, with Sherlock Holmes being my favorite film and series.

What excites you most about what you’re building at Somnia?

A: Absolutely! The concept of developing a blockchain for a specific niche, facilitating interoperability across the Metaverse, Gaming, NFTs, and Social Platforms, and simplifying the process of creating experiences from scratch is truly exciting.

What advice would you give to people getting started in the industry?

A: My advice would be not to FOMO in anything to get rich overnight. Instead, take the time to explore the space, learn more about it, and focus deeply on one niche for greater success in the industry.

What has the biggest challenge been so far?

A: The biggest challenge I face is keeping up with the rapid evolution of technology and staying informed about the latest developments in the field.

What do you do for fun outside of work?

A: Driving is one of my hobbies and a great way for me to relieve stress. On weekends, I often go for long drives to relax and recharge.
